We are proud to celebrate a historic milestone from this year’s National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive. For the first time, over one million pounds of food donations were collected across the State of Hawai‘i! “Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who helped us reach our goal of collecting over a million pounds of food! We appreciate all of you for making a difference in someone else’s life,” says the Hawaii State Association of Letter Carriers President, Cynthia Ishizaki.
This incredible achievement was only possible because of the tireless efforts of our NALC postal workers, union volunteers, the Hawai‘i Department of Education, and our dedicated community partners. Your hard work has filled the shelves of local food banks and helped put food on the tables of families who need it most.
According to the Hawaii Foodbank, one in three families in Hawai‘i faces food insecurity. Food banks across our nation and here at home face real challenges as federal funding has been reduced. With fewer resources and rising demand, and as students lose access to school meals during summer months, our community’s support is more important than ever. This project requires community-wide effort, and we are grateful to everyone who made it possible. From those who helped with the distribution of the school flyers, collected donations, sorted food, and helped spread the word. Hawaii’s unions will continue to support our local food banks so no family in our community has to face hunger. Mahalo nui loa!
